I just read a short article in which Mark Batterson was talking about a book by Garry Kasparov titled “How Life Imitates Chess”.

Kasparov won his first world-championship chess match in 1985 and he dominated the chess qworld for several decades. In the book he shares some of the lessons he learned. Here is one of them: “A Grandmaster makes the best moves because they are based on what he wants the board to look like ten or twenty moves in the future.”

That is exactly why I serve children.

In their hands is the future - ten or twenty, or fifty years in the future.

Can Rights Be Wrong?

Here again the concept of stewardship serves as a helpful guiding principle [in thinking about your rights]. Rights are not something you deserve and possess for your own benefit. Rather, they are privileges given to you by God, and he wants you to use them for his glory and to benefit others, especially by helping them know Christ. As a steward, it is also appropriate to consider your needs and personal responsibilities (Phil. 2:3-4). Thus, whenever there is a question about your rights, you should ask yourself questions like these:

"Will exercising my rights honor God by showing the power of the gospel in my life?"
"Will exercising my rights advance God's kingdom--or will it advance only my interests at the expense of his kingdom?"
"Will exercising my rights benefit others?"
"Is exercising my rights essential for my own well-being?"

Perhaps the most important characteristic of a steward is faithfulness: "Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful" (I Cor. 4:2). Faithfulness is not a matter of results; it is a matter of dependent obedience. God knows that you cannot control other people, so he will not hold you responsible for the ultimate outcome of a conflict (Rom. 12:18). What he will look at is whether you sought his strength and guidance, remembered the freedom and power you have through the gospel, and obeyed his commands and wisely used the resources he has given you. If you have depended on him and done your best to resolve a conflict in a loving and biblical manner, no matter how the situation turns out, you will have earned that marvelous commendation: "Well done, good and faithful servant!" (Matt. 25:21a).

Mary and I were very privileged to attend the Young Life "All Staff Conference" in Orlando this past week. So many things to tell you about...it was a great vacation as well as spiritual uplift. We went to the Magic Kingdom, wore shorts all week, met wonderful people, heard Nicole C. Mullen and Jars of Clay perform as well as Jeff Foxworthy! Speakers included Denny Rydberg, Susan Huthison, Earl Palmer, and Donald Miller...special presentation by Ben Stein and lots more. Mary and I stayed an extra day and went to Epcot as well as the Blue Man Group concert...Awesome! Thanks Young Life!

Journaling, a goal for the new year

Journaling allows you to know yourself a bit better-and much more.

"Unless we spend as much time looking at God as we spend looking at our self, our knowing of our self will simply draw us further and further into an abyss of self-fixation."

Thoughts and feelings, inscribed in black and white, allow you the opportunity to step back and be objective enough to move forward, make positive changes, and avoid repeating past mistakes.

Journaling is a practice in itself, but also a method for engaging in other practices: worship, prayer, self-examination, confession.

A journal is a place where we can (among other things) record the activity of God in our lives.
And one easy way to understand yourself is to keep a journal to write your thoughts, your prayers, and your fears. In the very act of writing, you will discover yourself. Things you don't expect will flow out when you put a pen to paper.

Journaling can also be a place to listen to God and practice self-examination-which is an honest, God-guided look at your actions and motivations. Journaling about what we've read in Scripture, or when we've seen God at work in our lives, can help us to get to know God and focus on him-a better use of our awareness. Knowing ourselves through journaling won't do us any good unless we also get to know who God is.

"People who have never developed a deep personal knowing of God will be limited in the depth of their personal knowing of themselves," Benner writes. "Failing to know God, they will be unable to know themselves, as God is the only context in which their being makes sense."

I like this book! Donald Miller suggests that repentance has something to do with choosing one audience over another. Getting honor and affirmation from one another is not enough nor is it particularly aligned with objective and absolute truth.

"Look, you guys are running around like monkeys trying to get people to clap, but people are fallen, they are separated from God, so they have no idea what is good or bad, worthy to be judged or set free, beautiful or ugly to begin with. Based on the New Living Translation, this Bible contains daily readings for 365 days, half from the Old Testament and half from the New Testament. In addition to the main selection for each day from one of the Testaments, there is a related verse or more from the other.

The One Year Bible for Kids is not a complete read-the-Bible-in-a-year plan. That would not be appropriate for this age child, but it has some important features:

It does establish the habit of regular Bible reading;
It does introduce the youngster to the "greatest Bible passages";
It is printed on good thick paper in fairly large type for easy reading;
It does have brief footnotes to help with understanding the meaning of certain words.

At the beginning to each reading is a short introduction to set the scene and at the end is a note to help a kid with application of the text.

We all need to have an identity, which gives us status and self-esteem. However, many people believe that they will gain an identity through a position in the workplace and community or through possessions, which others will admire or even envy. Others think that they will find an identity in pleasures they pursue.

These three false identities were actually at the root of Satan’s temptations to Jesus when He was in the wilderness. First, Satan tempted Jesus with the identity of pleasure: “Command that these stones be made bread.” The second temptation posed an identity through position: “If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down.” The third temptation presented an identity in possessions as Satan showed Him all the kingdoms of the earth and their glory. “All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.” (See Matthew 4:1–10.)

Few things cause as much conflict as trying to control other people. Some attempts to control others are blatantly self-serving, such as maximizing our own profit or influence at another person's expense (Gen.29:15-30). But the more common type of control involves trying to persuade, manipulate, or force people to do things that simply make our lives more comfortable and convenient.

Food for Thought

Our attempts at controlling others are totally dishonorable.

There are a few people who are blatantly self-serving; the rest of us are skilled at subtly trying to get our way and make life easier for ourselves. It may very well be one of the hardest things in the world to do -- let people be. If we let others be, then that leaves us with only one option of somebody to work on -- ourselves.

This is not some ego-heavy, self-focus. No, this is continually searching our own hearts, minds, souls, and strength to see where elements of selfish persuasion, me-centered manipulation, and it's-all-about-me attitudes are being used in our relationships with other people. It's actually a very honoring way to live. We honor God by admitting that He is in control, not us. We honor other people and the way God is working in their lives. And we honor ourselves, realizing what an honor it is to daily walk with a Savior who loves us and is conforming us into His image.

The Power of Surrender

Here is an excerpt from a daily devotional on the commands of Christ:

Over the years, I have asked many young people if they love the Lord, and they assure me that they do. Then I ask them if they have fully surrendered their lives to Him, and they tell me, “No.” They are holding on to treasures, plans, goals, desires, or passions and are afraid to yield them to God.

Their love for the Lord was only in word, because when we truly love others, we will be eager to give them all we have, even to the extent of laying down our lives for them.

The evidence of imperfect love is fear, because “perfect love casts
out fear” (I John 4:18).

What is it then that we really fear? In many cases we fear losing control!

Have you ever wondered why the nation of Israel conquered a heathen nation by God’s power and then turned right around and worshiped those heathen gods? Why would they serve gods who were unable to deliver the people who trusted in them?

The answer is significant: We like to worship gods whom we can control. A conquered god meets this qualification. We tend to create gods who will allow us to do what we want to do. However, the things that our old nature desires bring disillusionment, boredom, and destruction.

As soon as we surrender our lives to God, He will begin working on specific areas and deal with them one by one. This is the point at which commitments would be in order. God wants us to
commit our friends, money, music, schedule, ambitions, reputation, marriage, and possessions to Him. Paul confidently stated, “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (II Timothy 1:12).

God asked me to give Him each of these areas of my life, and it was a struggle to let them go. Yet, as I did, I grew in faith. In time, He gave back to me what I had committed to Him, but in a way that I never expected. For example, I gave my money to Him, and He began to provide for needs in exact amounts in answer to prayer. When I gave my friends to Him they left, but then He taught me how to make disciples. However, what I failed to give to God I lost anyway, but with much sorrow. My appeal to you is to surrender each area of your life to God as an expression of perfect love.

Reading through Exodus: In chapter 13 following the drama of Moses' request for Pharaoh to let God's people go, we read of the instituting of the Passover and Feast of Unleavened bread as well as the consecration of the 1st born. More than traditions, these constitute the core values of the people of God's identity: being rescued, provided for and dedicated to God. More than something to teach generations to come, now God is revealing a greater picture of what it means to "serve the Lord" and "worship" Him. What was written down describing these things was to be the substance of the phylacteries strapped to their hands and foreheads...more than an accessory, more than a cross on a chain. These elements appear to be designed to get in the way, be much more of a constant reminder. I am thinking it would be more conspicuous than wearing a sticky note...on your forehead and writing on your hand.

The feasts were to bring the people together in community, solidify their identity and focus their thinking--a memorial to God's mighty rescue and abundant provision for them. The menu was prescribed: sheep, goat and unleavened bread. This wasn't up for a vote. God has a people who will live His way, be ready to obey and follow Him. Then the act of consecration of the 1st Born. God, who is the first and best, should have the first and best, and to him we should resign that which is most dear to us, and most valuable. The firstborn were the joy and hope of their families. Therefore they shall be Mine, says God. By this it will appear that we love God best (as we ought) if we are willing to part with that to Him which we love best in this world. These elements brought distinction to a group of people who were formerly "a" family, the family Israel; now they are a nation, many families and a "Holy" people. Note: they are not by any means a "perfect people" at this point any more than the church of Jesus today. There are distinctives here which the family of God, His church are to focus on as well as how we are to be identified today.

This is an amazing event! 20 miles skiing from the top of Mission Ridge to Blewett Pass! Sadly there was an incident. Mary was involved in an accident after she left us off. Everyone is okay and Mary handled things wonderfully with the help of our good friends the Gambles. I finished this with Lyle and Betsy Strean, Bren Swanson and at least a couple hundred others. Young Life has 4 "C's"

...Contact work, Club, Church and Camp

at their Chelan Leadership Conference, I attended a workshop on Contact work. To me, it is this emphasis or distinction that identifies Young Life and determines whether they are successful or not. Any person interested in being used by Jesus with youth can make this emphasis and see fruitfulness. It is an investment that takes intentionality and TIME. You reap what you sow. These are my notes, consider them and use what God leads you to.

Contact Work:

Go where kids are

Don't make them a project

Love kids

Expect it to take time, 1-2 years to create relationships

You will have successes and failures

Go with who you are...don't try to be what you are not

Encourage, be consistent

Kids don't naturally know how to receive your love and care

Have kids help you know about them, ask them, let them teach you things

Contact work in pairs is easier

The more names you can call out the more at ease you'll be

Survey kids, use a survey on a variety of topics to get opinions, to know kids

Do contact work with Secretaries and Janitors as well

Take the risk. Initiate a spiritual connection. Say, "I
was reading the Bible today and saw something I've never noticed before. May I
share it with you?"
Draw close through prayer. Ask God to bless her, speak
to her, move her. If you have a problem or a praise, ask your spouse if you can
pray together.
Share what you're learning. Most men want to know what
their wife is learning from God (just not always in great detail). Share what
you're discovering, but pay attention to his response. If your detail is causing
him to glaze over, don't take it personally. Share what he's willing to receive
at the time.
Spend time with God … alone. You'll spend eternity with
God, so getting to know him is the main purpose of your life. Read the Bible.
Meditate on its truths. Take time apart from your spouse, kids, friends, and
distractions to connect to God. It will refresh you, give you perspective, and
offer an intimacy no one else can give.

Our friends Steve and Janice joined me yesterday as I attempted to "swim" with the salmon. I put on snorkle gear and swam in the Wenatchee River up Tumwater canyon where the salmon were spawning. Mary and I had the privilege of visiting with Nathan in his new apartment in Seattle as well as having "Ethiopian" dinner with him and his friend Shae. Great experience! I recommend it.

It was a great pleasure to take the Dickens boys and their friend Johnny from England rockclimbing up the Icicle. We had a great time both climbing and repelling. The boys greatly encouraged one another! See more pictures HERE . Daniel and Luke took the pictures as I belayed the climbers.

Anna has been doing well, but has been missing her roommate, her internet connection and tourist traffic to the Village where she has been serving. Her roommate came back to Ellensburg as scheduled, the internet has a glitch no one close has been able to figure out and the tourists...well, they are not as plentiful right now. We still have connection with her almost everyday and she is okay, but a note to her would always be welcome. She so appreciates everyone's prayers.
